Brian Mcknight entertained a large crowd at the Florida Theatre on Tuesday night as part of “A Week in Jacksonville With AARP”.
“An Evening with Brian Mcknight” was short, sweet, and intimate. The audience put off a mood of excitement, like they were visiting with a close friend from the past.
As the show began, the lights dimmed and music boomed as a screen lit up presenting a superman style super 'B' symbol. Center stage, Mcknight began singing "Find Myself in You" making his way to bassist Chris "Big Sexy" Loftin as the two of them boogied across the stage.
For Mcknight, love is presented in a cascade of notes with his rich, appealing voice. He can turn a simple “you” into a quivering sustained note electrifying the audience. Women outnumbered the men and unanimously cried out "Yes!" and at least one added, "I'm right here Brian!".
Mcknight continued with a collection of romantic, upbeat songs from his albums. His show was personal and engaging as he shifted from freely moving around the stage to joining the band with his guitar and piano for a couple of sets.
Known for singing powerful songs about finding true love and settling down, he admitted that even though he has touched on it a few times, he never had love until now, and that his newest album "Better" is dedicated to that love.
Working just the right amount of humor into the show, at one point, Mcknight turned his attention to the "fellas" in the crowd saying, "I know the ladies are screaming my name now, but they'll be screaming yours later.... and still thinking of me."
McKnight put on an energetic performance, and showed off some hip-pumping dance moves and as each note spilled out of his mouth, there was a certain reserve, as if he was singing to the women one at a time.
His stage presence not only worked for the women in the audience, but even the men were captivated by Mcknight's energy, and smooth vocals as he belted out one love song after another.
Over all, “An Evening with Brian McKnight” was an evening worth attending. The energy from McKnight and the crowd was both exciting and sensual, making you want to stand, throw your hands up, and belt out the words.
